O mirror, mirror of the Word:
Thy trenchant thrusts have I incurred
to bare my lusts; have done with Paul!
I am the vilest of them all!
Appointed trials, this heart, enflame:
ignite its courses, and reclaim
that right remorse, that grave concern
with godly fear, from sin to turn.
O Holy Spirit, ope Thy sluice;
affections' bourn again unloose!
my spirit, mourning sin endured,
still yearneth for its Hope secured.

inspired by the sanctifying work
of the Holy Spirit within the hearts
of the saints, especially conviction of sin
