Thou My Best Thought

how shall Your servant guard his way, O Lord,

to keep it pure, according to Your Word?

his driving purpose is to seek Your face,

his plea, Your rules to learn, Your paths to trace;

he gathers up Your words as timbered beams

to edify against sin's spurious schemes;

the tenor of his life, to bless Your name,

the temper of his mouth, to speak Your fame;

while worldly men consider wealth their prize,

Your servant. Lord, makes no such compromise;

his chief desire, to understand Your ways

and cherish their unfolding all his days;

Your precepts are the apple of his eye:

their truth his heart forever shall espy.

Psalm 119:9-16 (Beth)

put to verse
