who is this Man?

whom e'en the wind and waves obey;

who knew before who would betray,

would Him deny and flee away:

who is this Man?

who, kneeling, left His honored seat;

who traded raiment for a sheet;

who humbly washed our weary feet:

who is this Man?

who wholly knew my wicked soul;

who saw in me sin's aching toll;

who bore it on that barren knoll:

who is this Man?

who for our paltry faith did plead;

whose righteousness doth intercede;

who for our grievous crimes did bleed!

who is this Man?

He calleth men from tomb and cell,

and sendeth each to go and tell;

He rescues us from death and hell:

our servant King, Immanuel!
