art thou not His

with tenderness,

nor keeper of His earth?

hath He not bred,

not gently led,

nor suckled thee from birth?

doth He not tend,

not staunchly fend,

nor save in trials' dearth?

in meadow green,

by quiet stream,

shall He not grant thee mirth?

thou fledgling must

thy Shepherd trust;

He well hath proved His worth;

afar hath sought,

through perils brought

thee safe to pasture's berth.

a pastoral poem sounding out

the wonder of being a sheep

in the flock of the Good Shepherd

(Psalm 23, Isaiah 40:11, John 10:11)
