As the lamb led to the slaughter,

so He opened not His mouth;

as the sheep before its shearers,

so He opened not His mouth.

And at the scourging and the spitting?

at the mocking and the scorning?

at the crowning?

and the pinning?

Nay, He opened not His mouth.

O dearest Savior, precious Jesus!

tender sacrifice to reach us:

humble to the point of death,

giving up Thy final breath.

O teach us, Lord, to follow Thee;

to bear our cross, and self to flee;

to, silent, suffer for Thy sake,

sweet fellowship with Thee to take.

of Christ's crucifixion
