Flowers of Earth and Buds of Heaven

the milk-white lilac's sweet perfume

intoxicates the senses,

not perilous to seek its bloom,

nor prickly its defenses.

its dainty flower a thousandfold

emerges in its time,

not florid as the marigold,

but simple and sublime.

its beauty is as for a day,

flame's fodder for tomorrow,

but for a moment to belay

impermanence and sorrow.

not so shall be the flowers above

whose beauties perish never;

the blossoms of the Lord of love

shall flourish there forever.

a poem inspired

by the fleeting beauty of spring
